Thumbs up people - I've just found out Caligula is being released uncut in the UK next month, in a lavish 4 DVD boxset no less! Would make a nice purchase alongside the new BFI edition of Salo which is also out around the same time. I'll never forget how strange it was seeing the uncut version of Caligula a few years ago on an IMAX screen... Cor! They'll be going on my Christmas list. I remember seeing Caligula at the cinema when I was about 15 tho' that was the bbfc cut version but it was still amazing. I've got copies of both films but it'll be nice to have them properly.

Horror and exploitation fans in the UK should check out the recently released Eden Lake, a thoroughly nasty yet very well made film. Quite a punishing cinema experience. The main actress in the film goes through hellish circumstances that even Naomi Watts would think twice about doing!

The main actress in the film goes through hellish circumstances that even Naomi Watts would think twice about doing! ;D There's a bit of debate about whether or not Eden Lake was based on French film Them, mostly as it seems to have the same plot. Director denies it though. I thought the Spanish film rec was a fantastic horror movie, best I've seen recently in fact. It comes as no surprise that it's already been remade by the yanks so they don't have to read those confusing words at the bottom of the screen. It's out already, called Quarantine. Highly recommend the original.

I recommend 'Wake in Fright' from 1971 (released as 'Outback' in USA), a frightening Australian film about school teacher John Grant who loses all his money gambling in the outback mining town Bundanyabba on his way to Sydney for the Christmas holidays. He becomes stuck there and has to sponge off the primitive alcoholic locals with their bullying hospitality. Even a lone female living with belligerent men is not the sympathetic 'damsel in distress' dreaming of city life that Grant hopes her to be. A very threatening film.

I think many here would enjoy "A Serbian Film" if they get a chance to see it. Lots of nervous laughter, a couple of visceral body reactions and the world looking very different afterwards were some of my reactions.

It took two sittings to get through A Serbian Film, and a day or so of extra thought to process what I viewed.
Enter The Void on the other hand has thrown me for six; I've stopped it after an hour and won't go further, at least fr now; I need to summon some chi.
I don't rate the psychedelic experience and care little for it's art; this film freaks the fuck out of me. I've done all the drugs and should be prepared, but I can't.

I stopped for a stiff drink and a bit of a shake-out before sitting back down to watch Enter The Void.
The film gets as close as you're likely to see of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. The way it's shot is unsettlingly extraordinary; I don't recall anything like it nor any other film that freaked me out so much every step of the way. I went to bed thinking about it, I dreamt about it, and was still occupied w/ it as I woke (& I'm not even that great a film fan).
I think this would appeal to those that have taken DMT.
Give it a shot.

Seen mention on this thread of Kurt Kren's aktion and structuralist films; many folks on here would also enjoy the Vienna Aktionists two-DVD-R set, available at the Subterranean Cinema website. Can't find it online anywhere else; looks like the footage originates from some murky VHS tape that's well and truly done the rounds, but worth a look if you have trouble tracking this kind of stuff down.
Some good recommendations here ... thanks to all concerned!

The Wolf Man (Not The Original) - 5/10 - Boring for the first two hours, then it starts to get interesting but by then you are pretty much already fed up of it and you just wish it will end!

The Wolf Man (Not The Original) - 5/10 - Boring for the first two hours (which might as well have been cut off completely), then it starts to get interesting but by then you are pretty much already fed up of it and you just wish it will end! The original is much better overall.
