Got this recently- anyone else read it? It's a pretty decent overview of the entire post-punk 1978-1984 music scene in the UK and (to a lesser extent) the US. It covers a lot of ground and makes some good points - though hardly revelatory. However, Whitehouse do get some stick (pages 240-241) with Reynolds taking p-Orridge's view of the "abhorred" Whitehouse. The lazy accusations of Fascism are levelled, along with the dusting off of Sotos with the "if you can judge a band by its fans" line, (Dennis Nielsen liked Rick wakeman didn't he?) which is just bone idle. He also claims that "Tit Pulp" and "Shitfun" were named after "Specialist" magazines? Can anyone confirm this ? Overall a good book (Coil, TG, NWW, Foetus etc. also get mentioned) but disappointing in it's treatment of our beloved band!

aye, i cant recall much of it, but the treament of whitehouse is pretty ignorant and very much concentrates on the superficial. the titpulp and shitfun magazine thing was taken from an interview with steven stapleton from the early eighties, in which steve is obviously just joking, back in days when himself and bennett were working very closely together. here is the full text: www.brainwashed.com/axis/nww/unsound.htm

Thanks for that!
Going back to the book, I've just noticed the rank hypocrisy re: Whitehouse. When examining FGTH and ZTT records he passes off Rutherford's quote " We do extreme things in the pursuit of pleasure, inhabit a strange underworld where anything goes in the quest for kicks and C..cks". Imagine if Bennett had said the same thing but changed the male genital reference to the female?

I know Reynolds isn't highly thought of at Head Heritage, for one. I don't particularily care for him either...
