Anybody familiar with African / Ghanan / Funeral Drumming will feel right at home with this?... Possibly. Regular listeners of noise / PE will be suprised to some extent with the CD as there is a distinct difference to anything in the past, hence the new band name and genre.
Many tracks are energetic and give a real feeling of being 'dragged into the woods' and into a drumming festival, or maybe in a South African warzone (Stabbers Conspiracy, Backlash). These tracks evoke a strange fear, a sort of primitive (Though William contests this saying this is anything but primitive, guess it depends on what you take primitive to be, to me it's reminiscent of core instinct), possibly foreboding feeling of the unknown. Other tracks create an atmospheric, trance like feeling (in fact most do), which still have this eerie atmosphere (Four Crosses, Rain Washes Over Chaff / Away Everything). However each track is unique in its own way, the album is obviously themed but there is a lot of variation, mixing old with new. The electronics are second to none as always and the mastering powerful and loud. Just from the first listen, you can tell that a lot of work has gone into making this album.
The booklet has very intresting passages from William Bennett, Mimsy DeBlois along with other text and veve artwork.
This album is an experience that combines the power and intimacy of complex African style beats with electronics that are very unique and obscure.
96/100

Devotees of noise will be suprised to some extent with the CD as there is a distinct difference to anything in the past. Some tracks are energetic and give a real feeling of being dragged into the woods and into a ghanan drumming festival (Stabbers Conspiracy, Backlash, Impassion). Other tracks are more relaxed and create an atmospheric, trance like feeling (Four Crosses, Rain Washes Over Chaff). However each track is unique in its own way. Just got home after two weeks away so have only now been able to listen to Cut Hands. I'm really fascinated by it and am rapidly becoming addicted. To me, despite the heavy influence of African music and art, Cut Hands is not a 'take' on African music but is a unique, immersive and entrancing sound. Some tracks stun with powerful and elusive rhythms while others possess a haunting beauty. I also love the mysterious, threatening vévé artwork. As much as I am a fan of Stefan Danielsson I think his artwork used as the cover for Racket kind of overpowered the music and these vévés are subtler. I also especially like William's text in the booklet. Similar passages have been posted in entries on his blog, but printed in the booklet they take on a new life of their own.

After many many listenings, I can tell that this release is one of the best records I've heard in years. Honestly. Dont expect Whitehouse sound, it is something else. It's different. It is "fucking voodoo drums" with dark ambient background. The excellent Danhod review express much better than myself the feelings while listening to CutHands. Now I'd really like to see it performed live, in the dark, amongst a bunch of RUF nigga.... ;D
