I used to think WH was the most brilliant fucking thing I ever heard, and I still do, but I've slowly come to the conclusion they're not as 'original' as I once thought they were. So boohoo if someone samples them, it'd be a taste of their own medicine. Not that your points are wholly invalid, but there is a difference between drawing on things for inspiration and lifting someone else's content and passing it off as your own. I don't really have a problem with taking lines from testimonials for aggressive weight loss programs; those letters had no artistic intent and were used to perpetuate a scam. Most of the other instances you cite were altered from the original form and context in some way. Additionally, I can't think of a single instance wherein Whitehouse hasn't drawn upon an outside influence and bettered it 100%. However, I won't dispute what you've said about instances where soundtracks or other (presumably) copyrighted works have been lifted and "recontextualized" (though, I'm not reflexively opposed to it), and how such practices make it difficult to criticize anyone else who chooses to do the same thing. For what it's worth, I don't feel Mr. Bennett's response in this thread was nearly as absolute as you implied it is.

good points, you're totally right. though as far as altering, whitehouse only barely alters some of those texts. though context does completely change things. nor was i really criticizing, just pointing things out, i'm a painter part-time, i 'lift' from plenty of sources too, my most recent work involved the 'HELLO!' magazine logo, say what you want about americans, but we have nothing as awful as that tabloid.

This thread makes me think of the rather over-the-top copyright "WARNINGS" on the back cover of Susan Lawly releases, and how their essential cold unfriendliness somehow adds something to the aesthetic experience. Seeing an all-inclusive hippyish creative commons licence just wouldn't feel the same!

Hey Joe, I wish you'd continue with your Whitehouse esoterica list. Although I've been able ascertain a substantial number of Whitehouse references over the years, there are a great many I'm still completely in the dark about.

Here's one that margaras put me onto: 'the things we really scare about' passage on Asceticists (can't remember which song offhand - either Guru or Killing Hurts) was inspired by a Derren Brown TV clip from 2002 where he hypnotises a ghost train operator on a fairground into being terrified by his own ride www.disclose.tv/action/viewvideo/9432/Derren_Brown___Carnival_Ride_Scare_/

The last I heard (and this was yesterday) regarding the release yet to be named, is that the project was delayed due to "sample issues". I've no idea if this involves the track I have in mind or another. Time will tell.

An anorexic, secret boss's toothbrushing masurbatory mess lol (if that makes sense) yeah, definitely odd stuff, although i've struggled with eating disordered behavior in the past (and still do to some extent) i've never masturbated using a friend's toothbrush, nor had "submissive slave-type" fantasies about anyone walking all over me in heels lol

I don't know if it was really respected that much, but i heard that legally, a sample must not last more than three seconds...
