'EXTREME MUSIC FROM CHILDREN' was suggested on the Whitehouse Yahoo group thing a few years back ... Hhahaaaa. Phil Wolokitin (Monopolka/Tea Man With Tea Gum) ran with this idea: allghoikhorkhoi.blogspot.com/2007/07/extreme-music-from-children.htmlI haven't heard it but he told me some stories about the recording sessions over too much booze to remember them...such a mug's game trying to keep up drinking with a nutty Russian.

I don't like their music, if that's what you mean.. so much of noise does sound the same. As far as noise goes I like Whitehouse, Incapacitants, a bit of Russell Haswell, and that's about it. This sachiko m sounds interesting, i'll look into it.

I've got a very large amount of "onkyo" cds that I still haven't found the time (or right circumstances) to listen to. I think this is a problem with this sort of music, it demands a certain situation for it to be listened to. I don't have an adequate sound system for hearing them, only a laptop with headphones. Like hearing Maryanne Amacher's music, it DEMANDS to be listened to through good loud speakers for the full effect. Also, at the same time this music requires quiet surroundings for full concentration and unfortunately not everyone in my house wants to hear high pitched squeals all the time. One day I'll get around to them.
Th things I've heard by Ami Yoshida are a favourite of mine in this genre, but then I love artists that push the possibilities of vocals to new extremes - and really, these onkyo artists are the true "extreme" musicians at the moment. Most noise fans wouldn't get it I think, it can be very frustrating in its asceticism.
Best place to start would be the Amplify 2002 'Balance' boxset from Erstwhile, if it's still available. A very decent overview of the main artists in the scene.

A very decent overview of the main artists in the scene. Pretty much that whole "Off Site" scene in Tokyo is worth looking into. Personal favorites include Filament, Astro Twin, Utah Kawasaki and AVVA. And there's also something to be said for the willingness of the artists to subject themselves to an intense experience, rather than just subjecting the audience to it. It's simple enough to make a jet thruster blast of noise which effectively silences your audience's critiques- not as easy to force yourself into an intense mode of concentration, while every nervous squirm and derisive snort of your listeners is being magnified a hundredfold. Here is one of my forays into the world of 'constant tone' damage: www.archive.org/details/Study_for_TestTone_and_Retina_Burn1(A version exists on YouTube as well, but the resolution sucks beyond description.)

I've done a bit of cheerleading for this record before- it really is a great piece of work. Beautifully packaged too. A little more recently, there's an amazing CD with Florian Hecker, 'Blackest Ever Black' (on Warner Classics!!!) This utilizes the 'UPIC' graphic music interface / diffusion system developed by Iannis Xenakis- I'm guessing they're the first to do an actual commercial recording using this? Excellent psycho-acoustic mindfucking sound. I was also hoping that someone would have a recording of the one-off gig done in collaboration between Lasse Marhaug, Haswell and Mayhem (!) drummer Kjetil Manheim, but Mr. Marhaug says nothing as of yet.

Looks like I need to pick that up.
