Just ordered Hogg. Sounds very Sotos-like for something written in the late 60s... Hope it lives up to expectations and isn't just slumming around. My mother might have read some of Delaney's sci-fi stuff, but I don't think she'd like this much Feel free to let us know if its worth buying! Will most likely review it on my blog, as I have with the more recent Sotos works.

has anyone read stokoe's other book 'high life'? anygood? oh and while we're on the subject of stokoe, apparently he's written the script for a film called 'dog'. www.dollysdog.com/ , there's a trailer there too. I haven't read "Cows" (can't find it anywhere), but I thought "High Life" was brilliant..a clever noir chock full of coprophilia and necrophilia. Couldn't stop reading until I finished it. There's a sex scene on almost every other page, I think.

The Guardian in the UK published a short story some time ago by Chuck Palanuik called 'Guts' which carried a warning along the lines of it being one of the most disturbing stories ever published and that people of a sensitive nature should not read it but I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Is anyone else here familiar with it?

I believe I started to read it whilst I was on vacation in serbia last year...................however it got lost in a bar!
I seem to recall the authors name.
Could be wrong!

Chucky-boy must have a good friend on the Editorial staff. Still, when you think of the readership may have put a few off their muesli...

Yes I suspected as much...I'm suprised no-one has mentioned The Eyes by Jesus Ignacio Aldapuerta here, a collection of genuinely nasty short stories. I would also recommend The Consumer by Michael Gira but I imagine most people here are already familiar with it.

Is anyone else here familiar with it? It's from the novel Haunted. "Guts" is rather nasty, especially the other remarks about some types of ... uhm .. rather "special" practices of masturbation. The warning is a bit over the top and more of a publicity stunt. I'm reading Haunted at the moment. Nothing extraordinary, but way better than his last 2-3 novels. Still, he keeps on rehashing the issues introduced with Fight Club. Any other opinions on Chuck P.?

Am still yet to read Fight Club, but have read Choke, Invisible Monsters, Survivor and Lullaby, and enjoyed them all...

yeah it was Whitechapel....thanx! His articles for 'Headpress' were usually interesting and I enjoyed his 'Intense Device' collection. I've not read the fiction or heard anything of him for years.

Chuck Palahniuk totally sucks. Total hackjob, no talent. I'm telling you, "COWS" is godawful, don't waste your time tracking it down. In terms of sheer brutality, "Life is Hot in Cracktown" by Buddy Giovanazzo (sp?) is amazing. Makes Hubert Selby Jr. look tame. Just finished a book about Sierra Leone called "How De Body?" Kind of surprised it's not on the recommended books list. Lotsa info about cut hands gangs, etc.
